(I'm going to solve this problem using the RESAC form).

R : x = Lilet's age; 3x = Margie's age

E : x + 15 + 3x + 15 = 38

S : x + 15 + 3x + 15 = 38
     4x + 30 = 38
      \frac{4x}{4} =  \frac{8}{4}
     x = 2; 3x = 6

A : Margie is 6 years old while Lilet is 2 years old.

C : x + 15 + 3x + 15 = 38
     2 + 15 + 3(2) + 15 = 38
     2 + 15 + 6 + 15 = 38
     17 + 21 = 38
     38 = 38

Margie=M
Lilet=L

M=3L

M+15+L+15=38
Add like terms
M+L+30=38
Subtract both sides by 30
M+L=8
Substitute the value of L
3L+L=8
Add like terms again
4L=8
Divide both sides by 4
L=2.

Now lilet is 2 years old now substitute lilet's age to the equation
M=3L
M=3(2)
M=6

Hope this helps
