Yes. It made Pi realize that not all animals are friendly, no matter how grave the scene was. Because of this, Pi became very alert around Richard Parker, knowing that it might kill him. Without Richard Parker Pi would be dead because Pi would not feel any kind of responsibility on the raft, also, Pi would most likely go insane after a while because he has no company
