Pythagorean theorem states that the square of hypotenuse is the sum of the squares of the two other sides.

If c is the hypotenuse, therefore:
c² = a² + b²

c² = (12)² + (8)²
c² = 144 + 64
c² = 208
 \sqrt{c ^{2} } =  \sqrt{208}
c = \sqrt{(16)(13)}
c = 4 \sqrt{13} is the hypotenuse
