Number of non-students: x
Number of students: 5x - 30   (30 less than five times the number of non-students)

Registration fees:
Non-students:  50 (x)
Students:  35 (5x - 30)
Total amount collected:  9, 975

Equation:
(50x) + (175x - 1050) = 9,975
50x + 175x - 1,050 = 9,975
225x = 9,975 + 1,050
225x = 11,025

225x/225 = 11,025
x = 49

Participants in the fun run:
Non-students: x = 49 students
Students: 5x-30   ⇒  5(49) - 30   ⇒  245 - 30 = 215 students.

There are 215 students and 49 students who joined the event.

Check:
50 (49) + 215 (35) = 9,975
2,450 + 7,525 = 9,975
9,975 = 9,975
