'Hindrance' means something which interferes with something else. In scientific research, it has become an acceptable term for something which interferes with the research and makes the results questionable. For instance, in an experiment where temperature control is absolutely vital, a power outage, no matter how short, would be a 'hindrance', making the research data invalid.
