When these activities are performed in a barn, bin, silo, or other enclosure, farmers may inhale significant quantities of bacterial and fungal spores and byproducts. These can induce either of two respiratory reactions: hypersensitivity pneumonitis, referred to here as farmer's lung, and a toxic organic dust syndrome similar to that caused by inhalation of grain dusts ("grain fever") and confinement house dusts.
