 "The Gorgon's Head" is an allusion to one of the Gorgon sisters in Greek mythology who were hideous and could turn their beholders to stone with a single glare. Dickens' comparison between the Marquis and one the sisters (Medusa, I presume) shows the nobleman's stony apathy, his inability to comprehend the suffering of the people or make any effort.
