Change the mixed numbers into improper fractions then if they are dissimilar fractions, find their common denominator and then subtract.

example: 1 1/2 - 1 1/4

1 1/2 = 2 x 1 +1 = 3/2
The improper fraction of 1 1/2 is 3/2.

1 1/4 = 4 x 1 + 1 =5/4
The improper fraction of 1 1/4 is 5/4

Their common denominator is 4 so:
3/2 - 5/4 = 6-5/4 = 1/4

So  the answer of 1 1/2 - 1 1/4 is 1/4.
