A LARGE CALORIE (also known as the kilogram calorie, or nutritionist's calorie) is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one KILOGRAM of water by one degree Centigrade at one atmosphere pressure. This is the "calorie" that is used to describe the energy in food.

A SMALL CALORIE (also know as the gram calorie) is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one GRAM of water by one degree Centigrade at one atmosphere pressure.

When your conversation involves food or your body, the reference is ALWAYS to the LARGE CALORIE.
