How? First term is missing, not third term, right?. The third term is given. The problem given is somehow confusing :-(

Given : a_{1} =?, a_{2} =32, a_{3}=4

   since the two consecutive terms are given, we just have to find the common ratio, so,

            r= \frac{4}{32}   OR     \frac{1}{8}

   finding the first term,

           a_{1} =  \frac{32}{ \frac{1}{8} }
           a_{1}=32(8)
           a_{1}=256
