A diagonal is an imaginary line from one vertex to another non-consecutive vertex. So, to get the diagonal from one vertex : n - 3  where n is the number of sides that the polygon has. To get the total number of diagonals the polygon has : n(n-3) / 2 where n is the number of sides that the polygon has.

(n^2-3n)/2 where "n" represents the sides of the polygon.
