When the temperature is high, the molecules hit each other with more energy, lessening the density of the object and in turn reducing the speed of sound. Its the opposite when the temperature is cold. This makes the particles more tightly packed, thus increasing the speed of sound. Longitudinal waves travel faster in denser objects.
