Cause, let's say we throw a stone upward. As it rises the velocity gets slower until it reaches the top and have a velocity of zero. Though the acceleration is constant, as the stone reaches the top, the acceleration is 9.8 meter per second, that's the magnitude of the gravity of earth to the ground.
