X=larger
y=smaller

x+y=28
x=2y-5

Substitution
2y-5+y=28
3y-5=28
3y=33
y=11

Substitute again to find value of x

x+y=28
x+11=28
x=17

Let x and y be the numbers

l is the Larger
s is the Smaller

l + s = 28

Larger is 5 less than twice the smaller

l = 2s - 5

Substitute value of l

2s - 5 + s = 28

3s - 5 = 28

Transpose -5

3s = 28 + 5

3s = 33

Divide by 3

s = 11

Substitute the value of s to the 1st equation

l + 11 = 28

Transpose 11

l = 28 - 11

Therefore

l = 17

I hope it helps
